Cultures from Around the Block - Bucharest (Sound)
The idea of this project was to
realize sonorous representations of Bucharest
city and show its diversity within an acoustic frame. It was an experimental
project which determined us and the young pupils to discover our city from a
different point of view and to transform these new perceptions into sound art
expressions.
Cultures from Around the Block - Soundscape of Bucharest
These are sound art pieces based on
urban field recordings performed in Bucharest
by teams of teenagers from “George Cosbuc Highschool” and “Dinu Lipatti
Highschool”. The pupils were assisted by Komunitas Association members: Ioana
Florea and Miruna Tirca. We would like to address many thanks to some friends
that helped us with technical support and theoretical suggestions during the
workshops we had with these teenagers: Radu Mihai Molosaga, Alin, Maria
Balabas.

Inside Outside is trying to realize sonorous portraits of domestic
space vs. the outside open public space of Bucharest. This work uses home-recorded
sounds mixed with different city sounds in an attempt to offer an auditory
meaning of private and public space ( 7’25” )
Mimi
became a song which uses samples recorded in Zabrauti-Ferentari, one of the
disadvantaged neighborhoods of Bucharest,
inhabited mostly by Roma populations. The woman’s voice (Mimi) speaks about the
situation of this neighborhood, also about her dreams of leaving and buying a
house in the countryside ( 2’57” )
Urban Acoustic Visions is the result of field recordings in different areas of Bucharest. It uses a wide
variety of urban sounds: means of transportation, birds, voices of scrap iron
collectors, voices of women selling clothes in the street, rain, dogs, voices
of church priests, ambulances, etc ( 4’59” )
Urban acoustic visions – remix:
remixed version ( 4’29” )
Future Sounds of Bucharest – piece of sound art
imagining a post-industrial Bucharest.
( 4’08” )
Cityscapes – short sound mix following the story of somebody
that leaves home and goes into the city ( 2’18” )
Dreamland – a city walk that ends up in a dreamland ( 3’12”)
My crazy house – piece based on the sounds of a family in a house (
3’15” )
Funky piss – between 2nd-4th of April
2008, there was the NATO summit in Bucharest;
this installation uses fragments of official speeches and TV news from that
time mixed with pieces of songs and personal voice-recordings from our team (
11’03 )
HSD ( High School Dream ) – concepts that remain somewhere between ideas and
realization; at the moment, we are nothing but strangers on a field without a
compass; in time, we will find the church door, the compass and why not, a GPS;
our concepts are located between sound and noise; we don’t know the exact meaning
of these words, but from the combination of these two results an interesting
experiment: High School Dream project (4’07”)
