Life in a Postsocialist City: Introduction to a Concept, Slavomíra Ferenčuhová
Annotation: The article
attempts to question the concept of “postsocialist city” by pointing to the
plurality of academic discussions about both the notion of “city” and
“postsocialism”. It outlines selected arguments for using ethnographic methods
in studies on postsocialism that have been put forward (especially) by scholars
in anthropology. At the same time, it cites examples of urban research adopting
such an approach. Finally, it argues for using of the concept of “postsocialist
city” in urban studies as reflecting the complexity of its everyday, but also
academic, meanings.
